Abathor is a 2D action platformer game developed by Pow Pixel Games and published by JanduSoft. The game was released on July 25, 2024, for PC through Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. The game takes inspiration from classic arcade titles from the 1980s and 1990s like Golden Axe, Rastan, and Castlevania IV. On April 17, 2025, the game received a major free update called Abathor Ultimate Edition, which improved many features and added new content for all players.

Abathor Story

The story takes place in Atlantis, where the civilization has angered the gods through their greed and arrogance. The Atlanteans opened the Gates of Abathor while searching for an endless source of power. When they opened these gates, hundreds of demons escaped and began destroying everything across the continent. The gods have sent these monsters as punishment for the sins of Atlantis. Four heroes arrive to save the land from total destruction. You can choose to play as Crantor the barbarian, Sais the Valkyrie, Kritias the assassin, or Azaes the warlock. Your mission is to fight through the entire continent of Atlantis, defeat the demons and primordial gods, and close the Gates of Abathor before everything is destroyed. The game’s lore is based on the writings of Plato and uses maps inspired by Athanasius Kircher’s work.

Abathor Gameplay

This is a side-scrolling hack and slash platformer that can be played alone or with up to four players in local cooperative mode. You move through stages by running, jumping, climbing, and attacking enemies with your weapon. Combat is simple but challenging, requiring you to slash enemies multiple times to defeat them while avoiding their attacks. The game includes 52 stages divided across 10 zones. You must complete stages in order to advance through the game. Every zone has five stages, with the final stage featuring a major enemy encounter that must be cleared to unlock the next zone. Stages have checkpoints that let you restart from specific spots when you die instead of going back to the beginning. The game uses an arcade credit system where you have limited continues. The difficulty increases as you advance, with over 100 enemy types that have unique movement and attack behaviors.

Abathor Features

The game offers four playable characters who each have unique abilities and fighting styles. You can select from Adventure Mode for easier gameplay with more credits, or Heroic Mode for tougher challenges with limited continues. The Ultimate Edition update added the ability for characters to run, which makes gameplay faster and more dynamic. This update also introduced SpeedRun Mode, where all characters are balanced for competitive speedrunning. The game features over 40 music tracks composed by musicians from the classic gaming era. Physical editions were released in September 2024 through Tesura Games, offering Standard and Collector’s versions for those who prefer boxed copies. Local multiplayer supports up to four players simultaneously, allowing friends to team up on the same screen. The game has received very positive reviews, with an 89 percent approval rating on Steam and a Metacritic score of 78 out of 100.
