The story starts with the mass disappearance of Rathalos around the world. Players take the role of a young Rider who is the grandchild of Red, a legendary Rider. The adventure begins when the main character meets Ena, a Wyverian girl who has been entrusted with a special Rathalos egg. From this egg hatches a Rathalos with unusual black wings, which, according to legend, will cause destruction. This special Rathalos becomes the player’s main companion. The player must investigate the strange disappearances and other mysterious events happening across the land while traveling to many locations with their companions, Ena and the Felyne hero Navirou.

Players use a combat approach based on rock-paper-scissors mechanics, where they fight alongside their Monsties in turn-based battles. The game includes a Buddies option where an additional character and their Monstie join the player’s team during combat. Players can find monster eggs in dens and hatch them to raise new Monsties as companions. Each Monstie has unique abilities and can be ridden in the overworld to reach new areas. The game features gene transfer mechanics that allow players to move skills between Monsties to create stronger combinations. Players must predict enemy attack types and choose the right counterattacks during battles to win fights.
