You play as a member of Constellation, a group of space explorers. The game is about answering humanity’s biggest mystery as you travel 50 light-years around the Sol System. You need to find mysterious artifacts that are important to the story. The game takes place about 300 years in the future, when humans have spread across many star systems. You can join groups like the United Colonies, Freestar Collective, or other factions. Your character can be anyone you want, and you create their background and history. The story is about discovery and understanding what these artifacts mean for humanity. New Atlantis is the main city and is the biggest city Bethesda has ever created. The game also includes the Shattered Space story expansion, which is part of the Premium Edition.

The game lets you switch between first-person and third-person views anytime you want. You can land on over 1,000 planets and visit many moons and space stations.
