SteamWorld Heist II is a tactical strategy game developed by Thunderful Development and published by Thunderful Publishing. The game was released on August 8, 2024, for PC through Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. This is the seventh installment in the SteamWorld series and serves as a direct sequel to SteamWorld Heist from 2015. The game takes place in a far-future version of Earth where robots called Steambots have replaced humans and must survive on fragments of the destroyed planet.

SteamWorld Heist II Story

The game is set several decades after the events of the first SteamWorld Heist. Earth has been destroyed and split into pieces called shards. These shards still provide clean water, which is essential for powering the Steambots. However, a dangerous water crisis is threatening all robot life. The water has mysteriously become deadly and started corroding metal limbs and mechanical hearts. You play as Captain Quincy Leeway, a pirate who must lead his crew of ragtag Steambots across the Great Sea to investigate this strange phenomenon. Leeway starts his adventure in the peaceful area of Caribbea after recovering his submarine from the Royal Navy, which is the ruling faction of more advanced robots called Dieselbots. Throughout your adventure, you recruit crew members, including Daisy Clutch and Wesley Hotchkiss, and later discover that Piper Faraday, the main character from the first game, has been secretly helping you.

SteamWorld Heist II Gameplay

This is a 2D side-scrolling tactical strategy game where you control a squad of robot pirates in combat situations. The game uses a two-action point system where you can move, shoot, or perform special abilities during your turn. When attacking, you manually aim all firearms instead of using automatic hit calculations. You can bounce bullets off walls, floors, and ceilings to hit enemies hiding behind cover or perform trick shots to shoot hats off enemy heads and steal them for your collection. When you defeat enemies or complete missions, you earn money to buy new weapons, hats, and equipment from shops across the ocean. The game offers over 150 weapons and items to collect and upgrade.

SteamWorld Heist II Features

The game provides over 30 hours of content with numerous missions across various locations. You recruit multiple crew members throughout your adventure, and you must decide which robots to bring on specific missions since team size varies depending on the objective. The music is composed and performed by Steam Powered Giraffe, the same band that worked on the first game. Band members actually appear as characters in bars throughout the game, where they perform songs from the soundtrack. The game received very positive reviews with a 94 percent approval rating on Steam and a Metacritic score of 80 out of 100.
