You play as a wizard who inherits a master’s tower and wants to become the greatest mage in history. The story takes place in the fantasy land of Eo, which is home to humans, elves, orcs, dwarves, goblins, and monsters. Your main goal is to harness the power of the Allfire, a source of great magical energy. The story happens between SpellForce 3 and SpellForce 1 in the game timeline. You must compete against rival mages who also want control over Eo. You can destroy their towers or form alliances with them. The story is about discovery as you search for ancient artifacts and find secrets about your master’s legacy.

The game uses turn-based combat where you control armies and heroes on battle maps. There are over 80 battle maps across 15 environments. You build and improve your wizard’s tower by adding new rooms that help your magic abilities. Your tower can fly, so you move it around the map to explore new areas. You can choose from three archetypes and six spell lists. You learn over 100 spells from your grimoire and use them in combat. Combat requires thinking about flanking positions, range, visibility, high ground advantages, and battle enchantments. You can command over 100 unit types, including dwarven axe wielders, stone golems, orcish shamans, and griffons. Heroes and apprentices lead your armies, and you can hire over 15 of them. The game has over 700 quests to complete. Resources are important because they help you train troops and maintain your army.

The bundle gives you the base game plus three expansions. The Demon Scourge expansion adds demon units and new content. Children of Nor adds Dark Elves as a playable faction with eight units like Raptor Riders, Witches, Blademasters, and Warlocks.
