The story follows Val, a young swordsman who works as a Soul Guard. His job is to protect people called Alms who must travel to the sacred Mana Tree. Val’s childhood friend Hinna has been chosen as the Alm of Fire, and she must complete a dangerous pilgrimage to the Mana Tree. Every four years, chosen Alms from around the land must offer their souls to the Mana Tree to keep the mana flowing and save the world from destruction.
Val accompanies Hinna and other Alms on this journey across various lands and regions. The group must travel through dangerous areas while facing monsters and other threats. The story explores the friendship between Val and Hinna as they discover the truth about the pilgrimage and what it means for the Alms who complete it. The adventure takes them through eight elemental regions, each connected to a specific type of mana power.
