The game was developed by Motion Twin and Evil Empire, with Motion Twin also handling publishing duties. Dead Cells originally launched on August 7, 2018, while the Medley of Pain Bundle was released on March 6, 2023. This bundle includes the base game and several major expansions, including Rise of the Giant, The Bad Seed, Fatal Falls, The Queen and the Sea, and Return to Castlevania DLC, along with the game soundtrack.

Dead Cells: Medley of Pain Bundle Gameplay

The game is a 2D action platformer where you control a character called the Prisoner who must escape from a dangerous island. When you die, you lose all your weapons and items, but you can use Cells collected from enemies to buy permanent upgrades that stay with you. The levels change every time you play because they are randomly generated, so no two runs are exactly the same. You fight enemies using melee weapons like swords and daggers, ranged weapons like bows and crossbows, and special skills like grenades and turrets. Combat requires good timing because you need to dodge enemy attacks by rolling and use shields to block or parry incoming hits. Melee weapons let you hit multiple enemies at once if they are close together, while ranged weapons shoot projectiles from a distance. You can also use traps and turrets that you place on the ground to damage enemies automatically.

The game has a recovery mechanic where you can get back some of your lost health by quickly attacking enemies after taking damage. You explore the castle and other areas, finding new weapons and abilities hidden in treasure chests and secret rooms. As you advance, you can upgrade your character by choosing between three stats: Brutality for quick weapons, Tactics for technical builds, or Survival for heavy weapons and shields.

The base game includes 17 locations to explore, with five challenging enemies waiting at the end of certain areas. The DLC expansions add many new places to visit. The Bad Seed introduces two early areas with a new character to defeat. Fatal Falls adds more levels for advanced players with another powerful enemy.

The bundle also contains the official music tracks. You can find over 100 weapons throughout the game, with melee weapons using combo attacks when you hit enemies repeatedly. Ranged weapons include bows that mark enemies for extra damage and crossbows that shoot explosive bolts. Skills have cooldown times, so you must wait before using them again. Weapons can have special abilities like freezing enemies, burning them, or causing them to bleed over time. Shields can block attacks or parry them at the right moment to stun enemies and reflect projectiles back. Two-handed weapons take both your weapon slots but give you two separate attacks that work well together. You can upgrade the quality of your weapons permanently by spending Cells at special locations, which makes them stronger for all future runs.
