The game follows Wei Shen, an undercover police officer who goes deep inside one of Hong Kong’s most powerful criminal organizations, the Sun On Yee Triad. Wei was born in Hong Kong but grew up in the United States, and he returns to Hong Kong for this assignment. His job is to gather evidence against the Triad from the inside without being caught. As he works his way up in the criminal gang, Wei starts to get pulled in two directions — his duty as a cop and his growing loyalty to people inside the Triad who he once knew. The story takes place entirely in Hong Kong and involves gang conflicts, murders, betrayal, and Wei’s personal struggles as both a cop and a Triad member.

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is a third-person action game set in an open city based on Hong Kong. Players drive cars and motorcycles on the left side of the road, as Hong Kong traffic follows British driving rules. The combat in the game is melee-focused, with players using martial arts moves to fight enemies. Players can grab enemies and throw them into walls, car doors, and other objects nearby. Gunplay is also available and includes a slow-motion cover mechanic that activates when jumping from cover. Wei can also hijack vehicles while on a motorcycle by jumping from bike to car. The game uses three separate experience bars — cop, triad, and face — to track how well Wei performs in law-related, criminal, and social activities. Side missions include street races, cock fighting, karaoke, and martial arts clubs.
