Need for Speed Heat is set in the city of Palm City, a place inspired by Miami. Players drive cars on open roads and take part in two types of races. During the day, players join legal street races called Speedhunters Showdown events. These races help players earn money to buy and upgrade cars. At night, the game changes. Night races are illegal and much more dangerous. The police actively chase and try to stop players during night racing. The more a player races at night without getting caught, the higher their rep score goes. If the police catch a player, they lose their rep for that night. This day and night system makes the game interesting because players must think about when to race and when to stop.
Players can also customize their cars in many ways. They can change the look of a car with new paint, decals, and body parts. They can also improve the engine, tires, brakes, and other parts to make the car faster and better at handling. Car upgrades are very important for winning harder races.
