The game continues the war between three factions who fight for control of the galaxy. The TEC, or Trader Emergency Coalition, is a group of humans trying to survive after being separated from Earth. The Vasari are aliens who fled from an unknown threat and now try to take over human territory. The Advent are humans who left Earth long ago and returned with psychic powers and advanced technology. In Sins of a Solar Empire II, these three groups continue their conflict, but the war has left them weak and vulnerable to new dangers. The Vasari’s past catches up to them while the other factions struggle with internal problems. The game does not have a traditional campaign mode with story missions. Instead, the background story comes through the faction descriptions and gameplay scenarios.

Sins of a Solar Empire II combines real-time strategy with 4X gameplay where you explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate. You start with a home planet and must build ships, gather resources, and capture new planets. The game uses three main resources: Credits for general expenses, Metal for building basic ships and structures, and Crystal for research and advanced units. You can zoom from a galaxy-wide view down to individual battles where you control your fleet directly. The game’s unique feature is that planets, moons, and asteroids move along orbits, which changes the map over time. You need to plan your attacks and defenses based on these moving positions. Capital ships are large vessels. The game supports up to 10 players in multiplayer mode. The game runs on a new engine called Iron Engine 3, which can handle thousands of ships at once without slowing down.

The game includes three playable races with two sub-factions per race, giving six different play styles. The TEC splits into Traders and Protectorate. The Vasari is divided into Exodus and Reborn.
