The story takes place on the planet Hillys, where people are under attack from alien creatures called the DomZ. You play as Jade, a young photojournalist who lives in a lighthouse with her adoptive uncle Pey’j and runs an orphanage for children. The DomZ aliens are kidnapping people from Hillys at an increasing rate. The Alpha Section military force claims to protect the planet but may be working with the DomZ. Jade joins the IRIS Network, an underground resistance group that wants to expose the truth about the Alpha Section and their connection to the DomZ.

Beyond Good & Evil combines action, adventure, stealth, and puzzle elements in one game. You control Jade as she explores the planet Hillys and completes various missions. Jade uses a combat staff called Daï-jo for close combat and a Gyrodisk Launcher for ranged attacks. Her camera is an important tool for taking pictures of species and gathering evidence for her investigations. The game includes vehicle sections where you pilot hovercrafts and spaceships. You can explore different areas of Hillys, collect pearls as currency, and take photos of animals and objects. Stealth sections require you to sneak past enemies without being detected.
