Dying Light: The Beast is played from a first-person view across the open area of Castor Woods, which includes a tourist town, an industrial zone, a national park, farmland, and swamps. Players move on foot using first-person free running — climbing buildings, jumping gaps, sliding under obstacles, and vaulting over barriers. Melee combat is physical and heavy, with weapons that have real weight behind every swing and enemies that react to being hit. Players can also drive off-road vehicles to move quickly or run through groups of infected. The game uses a day and night cycle. During the day, players can explore and scavenge more safely. At night, stronger and faster infected emerge, forcing players to run, hide, or fight. Kyle Crane also has a Beast Mode, a special ability that uses his altered biology to fight more aggressively and break past obstacles that normal humans could not.

The game supports online co-op for up to four players, with shared progression so all players keep the items and experience they earn during a session.
